Slovenske Konjice

Slovenske Konjice is a charming medieval town, nestled between the mysterious Konjiška gora mountain and the sunny, golden hills of the wine-growing region of  Škalce in northeastern Slovenia. The first written mention of Konjice dates back to 1146 under the name Counowiz and, with many surrounding villages, completes the unique image of the valley along the Dravinja river. Slovenske Konjice is the centre of the Dravinja Valley, which opens up from this point with its beautifully cultivated fields and hills, all the way to the foothills of Boč, Ptujska gora, the Haloze hills and Dravsko polje.

Slovenske Konjice inadvertently touches your emotions, it is a place with a soul, where noble stories embrace you at every step and where the heart of Pohorje beats its enticing rhythm. Slovenske Konjice provides beautiful views of the Pohorje forests, which shamelessly brushes agnst the town and, in recent years, connect to the neighboring municipalities of Oplotnica, Vitanje and Zreče in the unique story of the Rogla-Pohorje Tourist Destination.

The town has been the epitome of friendliness and tidiness for many years. To this day, it has received numerous esteemed awards for its tidy and hospitable environment through the competition organised by the Tourist Association of Slovenia. At the prestigious Entente Florale Europe competition, it received two gold medals (1998 and 2014), which places it amongst the most beautifully decorated of European cities. In 1998, the village of Žiče also received the bronze award, which is proof of the orderliness of the entire municipality.

The biggest cultural heritage pearl that the municipality has to offer is the Žička kartuzija. This former Carthusian monastery, located just a stone’s throw away from the city bustle in the hidden Valley of St. John the Baptist (Dolina svetega Janeza Krstnika) behind Konjiška gora, was declared a cultural monument of national importance in 2015, when the Žička kartuzija celebrated its 850th birthday. And even to this day, after all this time, it tells unusual stories …

To visit Slovenske Konjice and its surroundings is to feel the soul of a friendly town that offers countless possibilities for special experiences. The most beautiful experiences are the walks through the Old Square, in the middle of which a charming stream flows, which gives the city its soul and divides it into two parts. Walking through the renovated old-town center is like visiting a gallery where the most beautiful works of art are exhibited – the characteristic town houses with all their peculiarities.

The story of Slovenske Konjice is a special love story. The poet Ivan Minatti, an honorary citizen of the municipality of Slovenske Konjice, was born in Konjice when he wrote his famous verse: “You have to love someone”. Slovenske Konjice must be seen and experienced in all their charm. Then you’ll love them too. And you’ll keep them in your heart forever.
